Magpies

I counted 10 magpies in the Big Meadow this afternoon. Is this a record? Perhaps not good for songbirds’ eggs this spring but I don’t know what can be done.

  1. This time last year there were similar numbers, and similar worries. We consulted Richard Storton, our RSPB adviser, who said they were probably looking for the places in the hedge where they had nested in previous years (the hedge having only just been laid by our contractors), and not to worry as they would be off shortly to nest in people’s gardens. Certainly they didn’t hang around very long. So either they have long but unreliable memories, or they hoped the hedges would have magically popped up in the last twelve months, or they are just fattening themselves up before they go off to nest. With luck we don’t need to worry.
