There are signs of things becoming more settled on the reserve as the spring progresses. The fact that the trees are now in full leaf also makes it more difficult to spot songbirds. Thankfully, they are all still singing so at least we know they’re there! 32 species were recorded today.
- Flora Field was quiet with 1 Oystercatcher and a pair of Mallard on the pool next to the road with what appears to be their only surviving duckling. Two Brown Hares were very active, covering large parts of the field across the two hours.
- Singing Chiffchaff and Blackcap were in Pony Wood, along with 1 Stock Dove, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Grey Squirrel.
- The male Whitethroat was singing in the hedgerow alongside West Field, performing quite a spectacular song flight. 1 Moorhen was on the pool nearby.
- Two Blackcaps were singing in the vicinity of the orchard along with a Chiffchaff.
- 1 Grey Heron flew over Hay Meadow where the Cetti’s Warbler was heard singing on the far side of the field.
- On the canal, a pair of Mute Swans were sailing along with two cygnets and the male Gadwall was also present.
