This is a short summary of what has happened in the last few weeks along with news about upcoming events and activities.
Fairfield Association 2026 AGM
This year’s AGM will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 23 September in the Auditorium at The Storey, Meeting House Lane, LA1 1TH. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
One of the most important items on the agenda this year is the planned change for the Fairfield Association to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This is to protect the long-term future of the organisation and the land we manage. We have prepared a draft constitution, based on the model required by the Charity Commission.
The AGM will need to approve this constitution before we submit it to the Charity Commission, so if you have any thoughts or comments, please let us know at the meeting.
In Memory of Susan (Sue) Nieduszynska
As many of you will already be aware, Sue Nieduszynska, who was a Trustee of the Fairfield Association for many years and worked tirelessly to manage the nature reserve, died on 16 June 2026. The funeral took place on Wednesday 8 July 2026.
Donations
If you would like to make a donation in Sue’s memory, the family have requested that any donations go to The Fairfield Association to contribute towards the Lucy Brook Restoration Project that Sue spent so much time, energy and care working on.
Playground
Little Free Library
Work on the Little Free Library has nearly been completed by Lancaster Men’s Hub. We hope to have the library in place outside the toddler’s play area in the next few weeks. Many thanks to all those who donated towards the cost of the library.
Goal area renovation
Work is planned for Wednesday 9 September 2026 to repair the area in front of the goal. This will involve using quick draining rootzone to fill the hole and then laying new turf. The area will need to be fenced off for at least 6 weeks to allow the turf to grow in, but hopefully after that it will good to play on.
Milestone plaques
The “stepping stone” plaques, marking milestones in the history of the playground, have now been collected and will be installed over the summer.
Nature Reserve and Orchard updates
Path repairs
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Sue Holden preparing and writing the grant application, the Lancaster Environment Fund has awarded the Fairfield Association £30k towards the cost of improving the paths for accessibility. Sue is continuing to seek additional funds, while we are in the process of appointing a project manager to ensure the work is completed to high quality and in a timely fashion.
Lucy Brook restoration
Work should begin, hopefully in September, once final permissions come through from Lancashire County Council.
Bird reports
Chris Johnston has recently begun filing weekly reports of the different birds he has seen at the Nature Reserve. You can read all the reports at Chris Johnston’s Bird Reports.
The Triangle
Noticeboard
The noticeboard has now been refurbished and installed on some new, hopefully long-lasting, metal posts. Many thanks to Alasia
Summer Fair
We have set a provisional date of Saturday 5 September 2026 for the Triangle Summer Fair. Help is needed setting up and taking down stalls and gazebos, serving at the barbecue, doing a short shift on one of the other stalls, and performing or organising the music and entertainment. If you are able to help in any way, please email Dave Brookes at to let us know.

2027 Calendar submissions
Each year, the Fairfield Association produces a calendar featuring photographs taken in Fairfield Nature Reserve, Fairfield Orchard and Aldcliffe Road Triangle. It is one of our major sources of fundraising, and we rely on Fairfield members submitting their photographs for us to use.
We are still accepting submissions for the calendar, so if you have any photographs you would like to submit the deadline is 15 August 2026.

Volunteer work party sessions
- These take place every Wednesday between 9.30am and 1pm. Everyone is welcome.
- There are also Saturday sessions once a month. Next one is Saturday 8 August between 10am and 1pm.

There is no monthly meeting in August. The next meeting will be the AGM on Wednesday 23 September in the Auditorium at The Storey, Meeting House Lane, LA1 1TH.
