Explanation

Ponds

The two blue ponds on the right side of the map.

  • Pond should be of similar design and profile to other ponds on site.
  • Compact the pond bed as much as possible to retain water. If required, use arisings to raise the edge of the downstream bank to better hold water.

Two in-channel ponds

(The other two ponds further to the left.)

  • Two in-channel ponds approx. 1.2-1.8m at the deepest point with shallow edge gradient.
  • The downstream bank (western) should be bunded to hold water in the upstream channels. The bund can be keyed into the adjacent higher ground.
  • Spread arisings thinly over adjacent grassland, ideally in areas marked for tree planting pens. Creation of small, low sinuous bunds and berms are also acceptable.

Braided Channels

(The blue channels than run from the right down to the in-channel ponds.)

  • Excavate approx. 240m of new channels fed from Lucy Brook.
  • New channels should be between 0.9 and 1.5m deep (depending on topography) with a shallow edge gradient.
  • Allow meanders to function naturally once filled. Expect changes and movement to occur from natural processes.

Spillways

(The blue circular icons at the left edge of the in-channel ponds.)

  • Construct a spillway for each pond to allow water to flow back into Lucy Brook.
  • Spillway crest should be at least 0.5m above the height of the brook (approx. 12.5m AOD).
  • Spillways will be constructed using pre-cast concrete paving slabs and keyed into the bund to reduce erosion risk.
  • Allow water to flow freely over the surface from the spillway.

Woody Dams

(The round brown crosses running down Lucy Brook.)

  • One of a series (at least 3 but ideally 6) of woody dams in Lucy Brook to slow flow and encourage water to back up into the new channels and ponds.
  • Dams should be built of natural materials and keyed into the banks. Larch planks and stakes are suitable.
  • The tallest upstream dam should be 0.5m below the height of the reedbed control sluice. Dams downstream should be staggered with incrementally decreasing crest heights.

New Fencing

(The thin black boundary line.)

  • Install new stock fencing and gate access.
