Spotted this little bird (smaller than e.g. a moorhen), on the canal by Aldcliffe Rd. today. It was diving, and coming up with a little fish most times! Is it a Little Grebe in its winter plumage? Or a juvenile of some variety? Sorry about the picture quality, but it’s just on my phone.

Linnets & Teal
I saw a treeful of linnets (is that the collective noun for them <g>) along the long pads footpath this afternoon, looking very pretty in the glow of the setting sun. Also seven teal on the school pond – I hadn’t seen them there for a few weeks.
Grey Partridge
Spotted a group (covey?) of Grey Partridge foraging in the stubble of the arable field, close to the Long Pads path, yesterday evening. At least five of them.
Brown Hare in West Field
Saw a pair of brown hare in the West Field around 8 am this morning.
Wheatear
Saw two of the previously-blogged wheatear, more sensibly on the leeward Aldcliffe Rd. side!
Hares in Fauna Field
Saw 2 hares in the Fauna field yesterday evening (31st March), between Aldcliffe Rd. and the hedge running behind the houses there. One of them approached quite close to the wall along by the road – wish I’d had my camera!
I notice they’re ploughing that field today. I wonder what affect that will have on them.
Mistle Thrush in Big Meadow
Spotted a pair of mistle thrush in big meadow today, between the Fauna path and the orchard. Saw them first about 2:00, and they were still there half an hour later.
Sandpiper on School Pond
We spotted a Common Sandpiper on the mud at the edge of School Pond today – 3:00pm 6th August.
